New muffler came in from RockAuto today and this is how it arrived at my door. I guess it made it so... no harm no foul? But seriously that is pretty unacceptable packaging for an $80 part, regardless of where it mounts on the car.
Update: Got home and inspected it (and the other poorly packaged exhaust stuff I got today) and indeed, everything is fine. I guess I should worry less and be excited that I have a new exhaust for the Alfa! Only parts I’m waiting on now are the shocks.

What packaging?

Thats poor. reminds me of the radiator I got from amazon, holes all over the box and bashed in, versus the one I got from Rock auto (packaged by the manufacture) which was heavily padded and secure and arrived trouble free.

Hey there is a little bubble wrap on the body of the muffler! I think that actually makes it worse. It means someone approached this with packing materials and walked away satisfied they’d done their job.

Bubble wrap is just entertainment.

Ehh, I don’t see what the big deal is. They ship tires sans packaging all the time. Mufflers aren’t likely to be damaged by rough handling.

Indeed.

I guess? I never underestimate shippers’ abilities to destroy anything and everything in their care.

I had a set of $400 Cats delivered with less packaging than that from them. In fact, the shipping label was just stuck on to one of the heat shields.

Put another way, anything that could conceivably damage a steel muffler, would probably also damage a steel muffler in a box with some bubble wrap.

Sort of? This “packaging” allows a lot of opportunities for weird toques and loading, not to mention it getting caught on equipment and other packages. Since the muffler isn’t flat if they say, set several packages on the whole assembly it would put a pretty substantial load on the muffler as the ends of the pipe were forced down.
All speculation. If it looks as good IRL as it does in the photo I’m just going to go with it.

I’ve had several prebent exhaust systems delivered over the years and most of them were unpackaged, none have arrived with anything more than scuff marks.

Glad to hear it! (Not sarcasm) This is my first so my inclination is to worry. I’ll make sue to update the post once I lay eyes on it.

I got a replacement tailpipe for the YJ, it came packaged like that.

I must try this with the cat.
Pray for me.

Ha, good luck with that. One of our cats would love it, the other, not so much.
